For fifty-three years, Master Lek has pressed gold leaf onto temple pillars by hand.
His studio, tucked behind a noodle shop on Thanon Maha Chai, holds the last working archive
of pre-1970s gilding tools in Bangkok. We spent a morning watching him work, and a lunch
learning why he refuses to teach apprentices.
